The story of this project

Set during the battle of the Somme during World War 1. Delville Wood is the true story of the undermanned and ill-equipped South African 1st Brigade, who are reluctantly tasked by British high command to flank the German Army by use of the heavily wooden area to the East. The purpose of which is to create a diversion for the British forces stationed at the town of Longueville. The South African forces however, are soon cut off and surrounded. Left to fend for themselves as the British are beaten back, and for six grueling days, the men of the 1st South African Brigade are forced to fight off attack after attack of constant German advances and ruthless artillery bombardments.

It is the period piece equivalent of the underdog triumphs story, as the South African soldiers were thought of as inferior and unfit for frontline duty at the time. But by the very end they had won the respect of the British High Command, as well as that of their German Counterparts.

It is a story of perseverance in the face of certain death, when all hope seems lost, it the human spirit and comradery that  sees our heroes to success.
